The angel comes in with a lily, one hand raised, and Our Lady turns from her book with an open palm. Above them the Holy Spirit comes down as a dove. Emanuela Daffra, writing the Restituzioni entry, notes that a rosebush without thorns and a crescent moon have been read as allusions to the Immaculate Conception, always championed by the Franciscans; the work came from San Francesco at Viadana, where a confraternity in its honour was founded in 1513. Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli sets the two outdoors on a floor of precious marbles, perhaps, Daffra suggests, what remains of a ruined temple. On that old stone the Word will take flesh.
