No one weighs these souls. Angels sit at desks with open books, and a life is read line by line. In place of the old scales, the Master of 1549 seats accountants who check each deed against the ledgers of angels and demons, and the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga calls it a return to the Last Judgement of the Apocalypse, told with new ideas. The dead rise at lower right and climb to a platform, in a movement the museum compares to liturgical theatre. Judged, they go down to hell on the left or up through a Renaissance portico lined with the Virtues, toward Christ on His throne.
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing in the presence of the throne. And the books were opened: and another book was opened, which was the book of life. And the dead were judged by those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
