Look for the snowflakes before the kings. Bruegel dabbed them as specks of different sizes and shapes, white across most of the panel and grey where they fall in front of the frozen canal. Announcing the collection's exhibition, ch-cultura.ch called it the first depiction of falling snow in panel painting.
An old inventory of the Jabach collection described it: a winter picture with many figures, the three kings in front adoring the Lord, much snow falling, and a small child gliding on a little sledge.
The kings adore. The child on the sledge keeps gliding. The snow falls on both.
