Bruegel paints the census as a payment. In front of the inn, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium point out, one man hands over his money, probably to a tax collector, while another collector fills out a register, and the Habsburg coat of arms hangs on the front of the building.
Joseph and Mary come in at the foreground: a man carrying a carpenter's saw, a woman wrapped in a big blue coat on a donkey. Luke names Augustus as the one who ordered the count.
Augustus's decree arrives in Brabant under a Habsburg crest.
