The Christ Child reaches up and takes a fold of His Mother's veil in His fingers. Five angels hold the cloth of honour behind them, a habit of the painters of Rimini. Miklós Boskovits reads the grasped veil as an allusion to the Passion, and the insect in the Child's lap, drawn large, as a locust, the Baptist's food in the wilderness; Giovanni Baronzio set this throne at the centre of an altarpiece for Saint John the Baptist, flanked by his story. Small lions on the armrests recall, for Boskovits, Solomon's throne. Its church is unknown. One small hand is on the Passion, the other on the desert.
