About this painting

Watch the Child's hands. The right reaches for his mother's veil; the left rests on an insect, drawn large. Miklós Boskovits reads the veil as an allusion to the Passion and the insect as a locust, the Baptist's food in the wilderness; this throne stood at the centre of an altarpiece for John the Baptist, flanked by his story.

Five angels hold a cloth of honour, a Rimini habit; small lions on the armrests recall Solomon's throne. Its church is unknown. Its meaning is in his hands: one on the Passion, one on the Baptist's diet.
