Christ goes barefoot, and at every step the wood hanging from His waist bites. The Web Gallery of Art's commentary points to those spike-studded blocks, cutting His feet and ankles as He walks, and to the grimacing soldiers packed round Him, one with a toad on his shield. Below, Hieronymus Bosch parts the two thieves. Soldiers torment the bad thief. The good thief kneels to confess to a priest, an anachronism Bosch probably took from executions he had seen, and the commentary sets his open mouth against the priest, who seems to suppress a yawn. Above them the Cross keeps moving, and Christ under it.
And bearing his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.
