The eagle is a falcon. Hieronymus Bosch gave Saint John's bird the form he knew better, the Gemäldegalerie says, and set it to guard the pen and inkpot at the saint's feet while a demon in spectacles, a burning ball on its head, reaches for them with an iron rake. John sees none of it. Pen in hand, book open on his knee, he looks up past an angel on the hill to the pale sun, where Our Lady, the woman of the Apocalypse, sits on the crescent moon with the Christ Child, crowned with stars. Out on the water the ships burn. The pen keeps moving.
And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
