The infant Christ leans from Our Lady's knee to greet Saint John the Baptist, and the two children meet as if nothing were coming. Saint Joseph and Saint Elizabeth look on. But children at the right carry a ewer, a basin of water and a towel, which the Norton Simon Museum, owner of the canvas jointly with the Getty, reads as perhaps an allusion to John's later baptism of Christ. Far off, a family flees by boat from pursuing horsemen, a reference, the museum says, to the flight into Egypt. Nicolas Poussin painted it about 1651. Water waits close by, pursuit far off, and between them the greeting.
