View in the galleryAll heaven is crowded into the air, and one man stands on the ground: Dürer, at the lower right, in festive clothes beside a tablet bearing his signature. God the Father holds out the Cross with the Son upon it, and the Holy Spirit, as a dove, hovers over both. Matthäus Landauer founded a house for aged, destitute craftsmen, the Kunsthistorisches Museum says, and commissioned the altarpiece for its chapel: the Trinity adored by angels, saints and believers of all times. The Web Gallery of Art reads the tiers, Mary leading the martyrs, Saint John the Baptist the prophets and kings. Among the clergy kneels one layman, Landauer, received by a cardinal.
