The ground under this cross is strewn with bones. The Web Gallery of Art's commentary reads it as the place reserved for the torture of condemned criminals, on the edge of a Brabant city visible in the distance, with a broken gibbet and crows.
Into that ground Bosch sets a kneeling donor, whom St Peter presents to St John, with the Virgin beside them. Beyond, small figures walk the paths toward a mill on the left and a castle on the right.
The execution ground sits at the edge of an ordinary Brabant day.
