Saint John the Baptist lies on the ground, barefoot, head on his hand, one finger pointing down at a small white lamb. He has not yet given that sign at the Jordan; for now he thinks, in a wilderness of invented plants and rock. The Lázaro Galdiano reports that radiographs and infrared studies made in 1995 found a donor under the unsettling plant beside him, a praying figure the museum takes to be the patron. Barba reads it as a chimera of more than six species. Bosch lets a bird peck at the seeds spilling from its fruit. The Lamb lies still, waiting to be named.
